The Modern Times Group of electronic and print media companies based in Stockholm, Sweden, has launched a new newspaper called Metro in Jan 2000, which is distributed free of charge throughout the Philadelphia region. The full-service newspaper contains summaries of local, national and world news, as well as columns, feature articles, sports, weather, business, TV and entertainment coverage. The Metro is distributed mainly through Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority locations.

Readers can obtain free copies of the tabloid-size, Monday-Friday paper from Septa subway and elevated stations and aboard Septa trains, trolleys and buses. ProMedia Publishing Co., which is newly acquired by Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., introduced five new editions of the Montgomery County Midweek. More than 103,000 additional households in Montgomery County, PA, will be served by the new editions, particularly in the towns of Jenkintown, Horsham, Dresher, Willow Grove and Abington, among others.
