Conversion of beta-methylbutyric acid to beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyric acid by Galactomyces reessii

Article Abstract:

The biocatalytic conversion of beta-methylbutyric acid (MBA) to beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyric acid (HMB) by cultures of Galactomyces reessii is investigated. The yield of HMB was found to be sensitive to dissolved oxygen tension. Further, microbial growth decreases with increasing MBA levels. Acidic pH promotes degradation of HMB while an acidically neutral environment is optimal for HMB production

Biocatalytic synthesis of vanillin

Article Abstract:

Results describe whole-cell biotransformations of vanillic acid by Nocardia cells. Data indicate that using vanillic acid derivative as a substrate facilitates overcoming complicated reaction steps in the bioconversion process.
