Conversion of phenylalanine to benzaldehyde initiated by an aminotransferase in Lactobacillus plantarum

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the formation of benzaldehyde from phenylalanine by using a cell extract of Lactobacillus plantarum. Control experiments with boiled cell extract indicate that the conversion of phenylpyruvic acid was a chemical oxidation step. Results demonstrate that the chemical conversion step of phenylpyruvic acid was dependent on temperature, pH, the availability of cations and the presence of oxygen.

Application of p-toluidine in chromogenic detection of catechol and protocatechuate, diphenolic intermediates in catabolism of aromatic compounds

Article Abstract:

The use of p-toluidine as a color indicator for assays which test aromatic metabolism was investigated. The protocatechuate-catechol amplifier can be exploited in testing various aspects of aromatic catabolism in different microbes. The method is inexpensive and simple to use, as well as being sufficiently sensitive for most investigations. However, p-toluidine's high level of toxicity to humans could present a problem.

Degradation of fluorobenzene by Rhizobiales strain F11 via ortho cleavage of 4-fluorocatechol and catechol

Article Abstract:

A study investigated the aerobic metabolism of fluorobenzene by Rhizobiales sp. strain F11. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that 4-fluorocatechol and catechol are formed as intermediates during fluorobenzene degradation by cell suspensions.
