Article Abstract:
Interspecies interactions are studied by performing in vitro coculture fermentations of Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and two acetate-converting, butyrate-producing colon bacteria, Anaerostipes caccae DSM 14662 and Roseburia intestinalis DSM 14610, with oligofructose as the sole energy source. It is found that the cross-feeding mechanisms could play a role in the colon ecosystem and contribute to the combined bifidogenic/butyrogenic effect observed after addition of inulin-type fructans to the diet.

Article Abstract:
A novel microcultivation method for soil bacteria that mimics natural conditions is described. By combining microcultivation with fluorescent in situ hybridization, previously unculturable organisms belonging to cultivated and noncultivated divisions, including candidate division TM7 can be identified by fluorescence microscopy.

Article Abstract:
Ammonium oxidation by autotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) is an important process in agricultural systems and nitrite. A real-time PCR assay was developed to estimate the AOB population size in soil and results were recorded.
