Article Abstract:
Archaeobacterial lipids are composed of saturated phytanyl chains in ether linkage to glycerol carbons with an sn-2,3 configuration. This novel configuration prompted an investigation to compare the liposomes formed from different combinations of methanogenic lipids. The results showed that uniformly small or large unilamellar liposomes could be formed from the different methanogens. The liposomes were intact and could retain sucrose solutions for extended periods. These results suggest that the methanogenic liposomes may be used for the entrapment and delivery of substances, as well as in studies of methanogenesis and bioenergetics.

Article Abstract:
The metabolic pathways of Methanococcus jannaschii were compared to acetate labeled methanogens. Eleven strains of methanogenic bacteria were grouped according to their citric acid directionality pathway. Cells were harvested from the culture and subjected to nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. A significant amount of label appeared in carbon positions with the labeling of amino acids during growth of M. jannaschii.

Article Abstract:
The occrence of hydroxy diether lipids in Methanosarcina strains was tested to detemine their similarity with the hydroxyl-group position of Methanosarcina barkeri. The lipid moity freed of polar head groups were subjected to structural analysis. Similarity in the synthesis of hydroxydiether structure led to the conclsion that this character was taxonomic in the genus.
