Article Abstract:
The patterns of removal of the main lipophilic compounds present in Eucalyptus globulus wood by a selection of fungal strains were analyzed to assess the viability of biotechnological solutions for eliminating compounds responsible for pitch deposition during kraft pulping. Results revealed that some basidiomycetes that decreased the lipophilic fraction also released substantial amounts of polar extractives, identified as coming from lignin depolymerization. Thus, the abilities of fungi for pitch control should be evaluated after analyzing compounds involved in deposit formation. The most promising organisms for pitch biocontrol were Phlebia radiata, Funalia trogii, Bjerkandera adusta and Poria subvermispora.

Article Abstract:
The potential of several naturally occurring compounds to mediate the oxidative reactions catalyzed by laccase are evaluated with the aim of identifying cheaper, more efficient and ecofriendly mediators for the decolarization of recalcitrant dyes and for other industrial and environmental applications. The results suggest that several lignin-derived phenols represent ecofriendly alternatives to synthetic mediators for laccase degradation of different types of dyes and other recalcitrant compounds in terms of both efficiency and velocity of oxidation.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the ligninolytic capabilities of Pleurotus floridanus MUCL 28518, Pleurotus ostreatus CBS 411.71, Pleurotus pulmonarius CBS 507.85 and Pleurotus sajor-caju MUCL 29757 during solid-state fermentation of 14C lignin-labeled wheat straw. The kinetics of extracellular enzymes related to lignin degradation were monitored. Results indicated that Mn2+-oxidizing enzymes have an important function in lignin degradation.
