Genomic analysis of bacteriophage (phi)JL001: Insights into its interaction with a sponge-associated alpha-Proteobacterium

Article Abstract:

A complete genome sequence of a marine bacteriophage that infects a sponge-associated bacterium and the relationship between (phi)JL001 and its host, strain JL001 isolated from the sponge Ircinia strobilina, is described. This unique marine phage-host system provides a model system for analyzing the role of phages in sponge microbial communities.

Oxygen-controlled bacterial growth in the sponge suberites domuncula: Toward a molecular understanding of the symbiotic relationships between sponge and bacteria

Article Abstract:

The molecular understanding of the symbiotic relationships that exists between sponge and bacteria is studied in relation to the oxygen-controlled bacterial growth in the sponge Suberites domuncula. The sponge-surface associated bacterium may use the diphenols produced by the sponge Suberites domuncula for producing energy.

Vertical transmission of diverse microbes in the tropical sponge Corticium sp

Article Abstract:

A diverse group of microbes is found to be present in aggregates within embryos of the tropical sponge Corticium sp. The results have confirmed the vertical transmission of multiple, phylogenetically diverse microorganisms in a marine sponge.
