Article Abstract:
PCR primers that amplify the genes for glutamate decarboxylase could be used to detect all pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli in water. Researchers show that all strains of E. coli contain these genes, whereas only six Shigella species out of 22 non-E. coli isolates tested had the genes.

Escherichia coli capable of producing toxins with a cytopathic effect on vero cells were originally designated verotoxin-producing E.coli (VTEC). A procedure was developed for enrichment of enterohemorrhagic escherichia coli by exposure to acidic conditions.

The multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for the detection of shiga toxin genes and single-nucleotide polymorphism in the Escherichia coli gene is greater than 98.6% sensitive with 100% specificity.
