Merck & Co., the world's largest drug maker, known for making the first medicines for cholesterol, osteoporosis and high blood pressure is facing a downslide. The firm was faced with a combination of problems ranging from fall in sales of its best selling medicine, losing patent exclusivity, company's policy for cheaper generic competition and inability to make better products to replace new ones along with weak leadership.

The lessons learnt by the pharmaceutical company Wyeth while working with the US and European regulatory agencies to mine their pharmacogenomic data are revealed. The data were a part of Wyeth's efforts to lay groundwork for regularly integrating genomics data into future clinical trials, before the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) issued the new guidelines.
