Article Abstract:
Molecular surveys using 16S rRNA gene sequencing in combination with sequencing a key gene of methanogenesis, methyl coenzyme M reductase (mcrA) is analyzed to understand the methanogenic communities of the Guaymas Basin. It indicates that phylogenetic affiliation of mcrA and 16S rRNA clones with thermophilic and nonthermophilic cultured isolates suggest a mixed mesophilic and thermophilic methanogen community in the surficial Guaymas sediments.

Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on sulfate-reducing bacteria from the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. The authors have investigated functional and phylogenic diversity of these bacteria via characterization of PCR-amplified dissimilatory sulfite reductase and 16S rRNA genes from the upper Guaymas sediment, and based on the results of this characterization the authors have identified the members of Desulfobacteriales in the sediments.

Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on Roseobacter clade strains from different marine habitats. The diversity of these strains has been investigated via the use of 16S rRNA gene as a phylogenetic marker in the effort to correlate phylogeny with ecology, and the results are discussed.
