The jacket cover design made by Alfred A. Knopf Inc's Barbara de Wilde, Chip Kidd and David Barry for David Shields' collection of stories, 'A Handbook for Drowning,' won a gold award in the packaging category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The jacket cover features a photograph of a man hovering over water, the two elements arraged in a manner that leaves the viewer unsure as to whether the man is entering or leaving the water. The ambiguity of the image prefigures the disturbing nature nature of the book.

Series design for Everyman's Library

Article Abstract:

The cover and title page designs for 'Everyman's Library' literary classics series made by Alfred A. Knopf Inc's Barbara de Wilde and Carol Carson won a gold award in the packaging category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. In keeping with the tradition of the literary works contained in each book, the designers took the traditions of classical bookbinding, and reworked them into a design that was modern and timeless at the same time.
