Article Abstract:

There are some 11 million small stockholders in the United Kingdom, but many only own a few stocks. Stockbrokers often prefer to avoid the cost of dealing with small stockholders, and new technology increasingly allows them to do this. Touch phone systems are used in the US. Voice recognition software is also being developed, and web trading is changing stockbroking. This has been slower to develop in the United Kingdom than in the US, and UK commission charges tend to be higher.

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom individual savings accounts (Isas) can be bought more easily than their predecessors, personal equity plans, and investors can purchase Isas online. Not all providers offer online buyers, and some only offer information online. Investors should assess the performance of Isas using information online, before going to web sites of individual providers. The number of online brokers offering Isas looks set to increase as the public becomes more familiar with Isas.
