Beware charges swimming offshore

Article Abstract:

Offshore investments have some advantages for UK investors in that tax liability can be deferred. This could be beneficial for people planning to move abroad, or who are likely to move to a lower tax bracket. They are also attractive to investors concerned about political uncertainty in the UK, and for those who want greater freedom in investing than is allowed by UK regulations. Investors should assess charges for offshore investments since they are not as transparent as UK investment products.

Performance

Article Abstract:

Investors who bought UK personal equity plans (Peps) in Nov 1994 benefited from buying at a low point in the market, though not all Peps have performed well. Smaller company funds have performed well with many at the top of the league, and Invesco UK Smaller Companies ranking first in a survey for 1995. Some smaller company funds have also performed badly, however, and are near the bottom.
