Beyond psychophysics: the need for a cognitive engineering approach to setting limits in manual lifting tasks

Article Abstract:

Classical psychophysical methods have been used to quantify acceptable manual lifting tasks. A number of published research has reported limitations in the use of the psychophysical approach to setting load limits in manual lifting tasks. The results of two studies to investigate human assessment of load heaviness, its acceptability and safety for continuous lifting are analyzed. Their analysis and the results of previous studies suggest that a new research approach to manual lifting tasks based on cognitive engineering is needed.

A cross-validation of the NIOSH limits for manual lifting

Article Abstract:

Cross-validation was performed for psychophysical, biomechanical, and psychological criteria used in the revised 1991 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health lifting equation. Differences were found in the recommended weight and action limits in the low and high lifting frequencies and small and large horizontal distances, among other results.

A neuro-fuzzy for estimating electromyographical activity of trunk muscles due to manual lifting

Article Abstract:

A hybrid neuro-fuzzy system is constructed for estimating the magnitude of electromyographical responses of ten trunk muscles based on two lifting task variables as model inputs. The model performance could be improved by increasing the number of inputs, including additional task variables as well as the subjects characteristics.
