The portable/cell phone industry's goal is to pack tiny cameras, lens, sensor and processor, into the millions of cell phones made each year and to bestow them with the gift of sight. Expected to be available in 2001, the new phonecams will not only be able to snap phots but also use wireless e-mail to send images over the Internet directly from phones. CMOS sensors seem to be the ideal solution due to the space saving, camera-on-a-chip design possibilities, as well as the low electrical power draw required by CMOS arrays.
