Big four jockey for position in industrial gases market

Article Abstract:

The world industrial gas market is undergoing consolidation, and the four main players are competing for leadership. There were rumors of a merger between Praxair and BOC, while BOC rejected a combined approach from Air Liquide and Air Products. BOC could still consider a merger. BOC ranks second in the world market, and Praxair ranks third, and a merger between the two would have left Air Liquide in second place, down from first place. BOC has carried out a restructuring program following a downturn in its Asian markets.
