British Steel: in business to make money

Article Abstract:

British Steel Chmn Robert Scholey believes that firms have a responsibility to their shareholders and that they should not be influenced by politicians who disagree with the decisions made by top management and the board of directors. Scholey's opinion is in response to protests over the proposed closing of the Ravenscraig strip mill, which is an important part of the eventual elimination of all British Steel activities in Scotland. The Commons' Select Committee on Trade and Industry is expected to criticize British Steel's policy in Scotland, which involves reducing production in Scotland when orders decrease while maintaining normal operations in other locations. The political protests over the Ravenscraig plant seem to be short-sighted because British Steel became privatized in 1988. A Jan 1991 report by the Scottish Development Agency indicated that prospects for steelmaking in Scotland were poor, which will only strengthen British Steel's position when it makes another announcement about reducing production in Scotland.

A touch of the Mitsubishis

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) VP Koichi Danno was featured at the Scottish Council Development and Industry forum in Aviemore. MHI, one of four divisions of the Mitsubishi conglomerate, is a highly diverse organization that employs 44,000 people and has forecast sales of between 8.1 and 9.3 billion pounds sterling for 1990. Danno states that MHI's success is due to its ability to transfer technology among its nine sub-divisions, which is made possible by the fact that barriers between different types of manufacturing have been eliminated. Since 1975, the firm's capital investment has dropped from 5% to 4% of net sales while funds devoted to R&D have increased from 2% to 5%. MHI participates in all stages of a project from design, through production, to installation.
