Forvaltnings holds a stake of 29.9% in the company, which could become of interest to a predator using this stake as a springboard for a bid.

EBC won 27 million pounds sterling worth of orders in Jul 1998, and has strengths in the real estate and construction market of south west England. The company's construction division reported a turnover of 59.1 million pounds for 1997. EBC's results for 1999 should be helped by a contract worth 11 million pounds sterling from the Ministry of Defense, and a housing project in the county of Somerset, England. The company's profit is forecast at 1.4 million pounds sterling for 1998 by Rowan Dartington.

Property will play a big part in Bickerton's future

Bickerton has seen an improvement in its construction margins and the real estate business will begin to contribute. Bickerton's group profit was flat for 1997 to 1998, but the profit from construction rose to 343,000 pounds sterling from 248,000 pounds in this period. Bickerton's profit is forecast at 600,000 pounds sterling for 1998 by Teather and Greenwood, rising to 1.5 million pounds for the following year. The timing of sales of real estate has an impact on the company's results.
